If you are new to the hookah charcoal business, setting up your first factory can feel overwhelming. One of the biggest questions new buyers ask is: Should I buy a mechanical press or a hydraulic press?
Both machines do the same basic job—they squeeze charcoal powder into small, neat blocks. However, they do it in very different ways. This guide breaks down the technical data of our 25-ton mechanical machine and our 100-ton hydraulic machine into simple terms, helping you choose the right fit for your budget and goals.
1. The Mechanical Press: The Fast and Steady Starter
Think of the mechanical shisha charcoal press like a high-speed cookie cutter. It uses a motor and a set of gears to punch the charcoal powder into shape very quickly.
What You Need to Know:
- The Squeeze (Pressure): It presses down with 25 tons of force. This is perfectly enough to make standard, good-quality hookah charcoal with a density of 1.2 to 1.3 tons per cubic meter.
- Size and Power: It is relatively small (1.7m x 1.5m x 1.2m) and weighs 1500 kg. It only uses a 7.5kw motor, which means your electricity bills will stay low.
- How Fast Is It? It is very fast. The machine punches 20 to 22 times every single minute. If you are making standard 25mm square cubes, it punches out 15 pieces every time.
- Total Output: You can expect to make about 300 kg of charcoal per hour.
Is this for you? Yes, if you are a startup. The mechanical press is affordable, takes up less space, and easily produces the standard 25mm squares or 33mm rounds that most buyers want.
2. The Hydraulic Press: The Heavy-Duty Powerhouse
A hydraulic hookah charcoal machine does not use fast gears. Instead, it uses liquid fluid and pump stations to build up massive, slow pressure.
What You Need to Know:
- The Squeeze (Pressure): It presses down with a massive 100 tons of force. Because the pressure is so high, the charcoal blocks come out extremely hard and dense.
- Size and Power: This is a heavy-duty machine. It weighs 2.8 tons and requires a stronger 15kw main motor to run the hydraulic pumps.
- How Fast Is It? It moves much slower than the mechanical press—only punching 4 times a minute. But, its mold is huge. In one slow punch, it can press 44 square pieces (25mm) all at once.
- Special Feature (Thickness Control): It comes with a T-shaped hopper and a smart sensor. This sensor lets you easily change how thick you want your charcoal to be, from a thin 1cm all the way up to a super-thick 6cm.
Is this for you? Yes, if you want to target the premium market. If your buyers demand the hardest charcoal, custom shapes (like hexagons), or if you plan to mix harder materials like sawdust into your charcoal, you need this 100-ton pressure.
3. The Beginner’s Recipe for Hookah Charcoal
Buying the right machine is only half the battle; you also need the right mixture. If your powder is wrong, even the best machine will jam.
Here are the golden rules for beginners using either machine:
- Rule 1: Never Use Coal. Coal powder smells bad and is unsafe for smoking. You must use pure charcoal powder, and the pieces must be crushed smaller than 3mm.
- Rule 2: The Glue (Binder). Charcoal powder won’t stick together on its own. Add 3% to 5% of a safe binder called CMC, mixed with 20-25% water. Do not use food starch, or your charcoal will lose its waterproof quality and might smell when burned.
- Rule 3: The Spark. To make the charcoal burn nicely for 40 to 60 minutes, you need to add about 6% of an ignition helper (like methyl formate or n-pentane).
If you want to learn exactly how to mix these, read our simple guide on the shisha charcoal manufacturing process.
4. Easy Daily Maintenance
Taking care of these machines is not complicated, but it is important.
For the 25-ton mechanical machine, you need to keep the moving parts slippery. Think of it like a bicycle chain. During your first week, you must put grease on the gears and oil on the bearings every few days. Later, you only need to do it every 10 to 15 days. If the charcoal powder ever gets stuck in the hopper, simply add a little bit of water to thin it out.
For the 100-ton hydraulic machine, you don’t need to grease gears as often, but you must regularly check the oil levels in the hydraulic pump station to make sure the pressure stays strong.
Which One Should You Buy?
To keep things simple:
- Choose the mechanical press if you are on a budget, want low electricity costs, and just need to make standard sizes quickly.
- Choose the hydraulic press if you have a larger budget and want to make ultra-premium, extra-hard, or uniquely shaped charcoal.
